Downton Abbey, Season VI, Episode II

My daughter returned to watch the second episode of Downton Abbey with me last Sunday night, and again the tea cart was ready when she arrived.

She opted for the same tea she had the week before [Bates Brambleberry black tea], but I decided to try a different caffeine-free blend.

I chose Afternoon Garden Tea - an herb and spice blend of ginger, orange bergamot mint, lemon thyme, anise hyssop, anise seeds, and blackberry leaves.

Our dessert was "Upside-Down Mug Pumpkin Pie."  I've seen recipes for desserts made in mugs and cooked in the microwave, but I've never tried making them myself until Sunday. They came out perfectly, and were delicious.

Here's the easy recipe:
1 egg
1/3 cup canned pumpkin [not pumpkin pie mix]
1 tablespoon heavy whipping cream
2 tablespoons packed light brown sugar
1 teaspoon all-purpose flour
3/4 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice
Whipped cream and Cinnamon Sugar or crushed Cinnamon Graham Crackers for garnish

1]  Grease bottom of 12 oz. microwavable mug.  In small bowl, beat egg, pumpkin and whipping cream together; add brown sugar, flour, and pumpkin pie spice.  Mix well.
2] Pour batter into mug.  Microwave uncovered for 3 minutes.  If necessary, microwave in additional 15-second increments, until edge slightly pulls away from mug and top is nearly set.

3]   Cool 10 minutes on counter then refrigerate for at least 2 hours or overnight.
To serve, carefully run knife around edge of pumpkin pie to loosen; turn onto small plates. Garnish.

They were great to eat while sipping our tea and watching episode II.

I received the Season VI Downton Abbey book, A Celebration, from Amazon last week, but haven't had a chance to read it yet.

I also received my last tin of Downton Abbey tea in the series from Republic of Teas - Mrs. Patmore's Blueberry Scone Tea - a caffeine-free blueberry infused herb tea made with red rooibos, licorice, natural blueberry flavor, natural vanilla flavor and natural caramel flavor. Maybe I'll try it next Sunday!  I think I have all of the commemorative, limited edition, teas from the company now.

What was your favorite part of episode II?  It appears Mrs. Hughes will have to yield to Lady Mary's wishes for her's and Carson's wedding reception to be held at Downton.  And how sad that the Drewe's will have to relocate after being at tenants at Downton for so long. Do you think Mary will figure out Marigold is Edith's daughter?  I'm looking forward to what unfolds in next Sunday's episode, aren't you?

Today is National Hot Tea Day, and below is the view from my bedroom window when I lifted the shade this morning. With 22 degree temperatures [dipping to a low of 10 degrees], accompanied by wind and snow showers, it's definitely hot tea weather.  Enjoy your cuppa!

  4. I am enjoying season six of Downton Abbey too. The pumpkin pie in a mug is such a great idea and thanks so much for sharing the recipe. I think it's lovely that Lady Mary wants to have Carson and Mrs. Hughes married at Downton, however I think Mrs Hughes should be allowed to get married where she wants. It is her day after all! It is going to be an interesting season and I would imagine there will be some surprises in store. Thanks for sharing and have a lovely day, Phyllis.

    Blessings,
    Sandi
